We used a roller to apply one coat of Behr deck plus semi-transparent stain on the front porch Sunday. It's now Tuesday night and we still can't walk on it because the surface is sticky/tacky. (It doesn't stick to my shoes, but my soles leave a pattern when I step onto the deck.)
"Most" of the time if a deck surface is tacky after it has been stained, it is because too much stain has been applied and it will not soak into the wood anymore. This is why I prefer to apply stain lightly, then wipe off extra with a rag after it sits for 5-10 minutes.

We are having the same problem with a first coat of Cabot deck & exterior stain water based over treated pine. It is sticky and tacky to walk on but seems to be only when the sun is on it, it is also very patchy in some areas.
